Please answer the following two questions that pertain to Lecture 20 and Lecture 21.

  1. Explain the difference between image-ordered and object-ordered volume rendering, as discussed in class and in references. Make sure your comparison focuses on the algorithmic structure of what is iterated over when the image is generated. Give an example of an approach to volume rendering that is image-ordered and an approach that is object-ordered (note that there are multiple answers for each, you need only list one).

  2. Multidimensional transfer functions typically allow the user the assign optical properties (e.g. color and opacity) based on both the scalar values of the data as well as what other data characteristics? Explain the motivation for doing so, in particular why those additional data characteristics have a good chance to capture certain features. Explain one possible limitation (again, there are multiple, you need only describe one).

Grading

Submit your quiz in a folder called quizzes in your git repo. Within this folder create a file Q07.txt that has your answers.

For each question, I’m expecting an answer of 150 words or less. Aim to answer each question in a single paragraph.

I plan to grade your answer on a scale of 0-5, where 5 indicates that you completely answered all portions of the question. Thus, you will receive a score of 0-10 for this quiz. This score will be scaled to the total value of this quiz for your final grade (1%).
